I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
Pinos Altos is a census-designated area located seven miles north of Silver City. Here you will find The Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House that’s been open since the 1860s. Throughout its history, the saloon has been visited by a slew of locals and travelers and has even had some famous guests. Let’s take a look at this historic spot in New Mexico.
Since the 1860s, The Buckhorn has been a fixture in the community of Pinos Altos. It sits on a mountain 7,000 feet above sea level making it one of the most unique bars in the state.
This is a popular place for locals and travelers alike to enjoy drinks, delicious food, and entertainment. It's also had its fair share of well-known guests over the years as well.
In recent years, Keith Morrison paid a visit to The Buckhorn. If you're a fan of true crime docuseries, you know that he is a correspondent on NBC's Dateline.
While filming an episode of Dateline in 2018, Mr. Morrison and the crew spent time enjoying the food and ambiance at The Buckhorn. The saloon was even transformed into a set for the show.
While it's incredibly cool to have such famous guests visit The Buckhorn, it's a welcoming place for all. You can come here and listen to music at the saloon's Opera House...
...or dine in The Buckhorn Dining Room or the Saloon. You can start out with a small plate of Italian meatballs with creamy polenta before dining on a burger or steak for your main course.
If you’ve never been to The Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House in Pinos Altos, you should make plans to go. Is there another historic spot in New Mexico you enjoy? Mention it in the comments!
