I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
Spending time outdoors is good for the soul. Fresh air, exercise, and surrounding oneself with the beauty of nature is often the best way to recharge. And, if you’re like me, taking a long walk away from crowds is sometimes needed. One underrated state park in New Mexico where you can take a long walk through gorgeous scenery happens to be in Raton. Find some solitude while enjoying nature at Sugarite Canyon State Park.
Located in Raton in the northeastern part of New Mexico, Sugarite Canyon State Park is an underrated park that's worth exploring.
With 3,600 acres of lakes, forests, creeks, and meadows set at an elevation of over 6,600 feet, this park offers an abundance of outdoor recreation and wildlife.
Of course, hiking is one of the best ways to explore this remarkable state park. One trail you must take if you want some solitude, however, is the Lake Alice Trail.
Set aside at least one hour to complete this trail that is perfect for either a brisk hike or a casual stroll. But you may want to spend even longer here, especially with lake views like this!
