I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
While Earth Day is celebrated for one day in April each year, I am a firm believer that Earth Day is every day. While there are many ways to be good stewards of our planet, one way is to stay in an eco-friendly hotel or vacation rental. Many of the eco-friendly Airbnbs in New Mexico I found are built with sustainability in mind and are found close to nature. Would you stay in one of these places?
Located in the high desert on 2.5 acres, this earth-friendly 420-square-foot casita shares the land with other guest casitas. This small home is a cozy space with pine ceilings and recycled carpeting, and up to two guests may be accommodated. It, along with the other homes on the property, is powered by solar. Rainwater is also collected for watering the gardens. With shared outdoor spaces, you'll be able to socialize with other guests. There's a natural swimming pool, trails, greenhouses, and gardens on the property as well. And while you'll feel as though you're staying in a very remote area of New Mexico, it's only a 10-minute drive to Santa Fe Plaza.
If you enjoy stargazing and mountain views then you will thoroughly enjoy spending a few nights at this off-the-grid accommodation in Los Cerrillos. Sitting on 40 acres, this one-bedroom house has a full bath, a half bath, a living room area, and a kitchen with a dining area. It also uses solar power. Spend time exploring the surrounding wilderness or head into the nearby town of Madrid. The choice is yours!
This unique off-the-grid earthen dome home was crafted by hand. It's perfect for indoor and outdoor living boasting a fire pit as well as a natural hot mineral spring. Sounds relaxing to me!
How would you like to stay in this Earthship house? With two bedrooms and one bathroom, this spacious eco-friendly home can accommodate up to four guests. On the property is a greenhouse with banana trees and grape vines as well as birds and turtles. There's also a fish pond. Find out for yourself why this was considered a top eco-stay by Lonely Planet in 2014.
Surrounded by a grove of cottonwoods and situated by the Taos River, this eco-retreat boasts two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a hot tub. As this home is in an ecologically sensitive area, certain green efforts are practiced including the way it was green-built and has dual-flush toilets for water conservation. This is quite a peaceful place to stay and there's even a meditation hut on the property for you to use.
I
Enjoy living off-grid at this one-of-a-kind home with a colorful, artistically decorated interior. This adobe home is 3,500 square feet with three bedrooms, 13 beds, and two bathrooms. Up to 14 guests can stay here so it's ideal for a retreat or a family reunion. It's also set upon a hill with views all around. You'll love the peace and quiet as well as the views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Considered a "Masterpiece" by the Wall Street Journal, this off-the-grid abode is eco-friendly as well as luxurious. Not only are you close to the Rio Grande Gorge when you stay here but the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as well. The location is just as perfect as this home with its open floor plan, a gourmet kitchen with a large concrete island, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms. It also runs on solar and uses rainwater.
