Every adventure starts with a single step. And then another, and another, until you find yourself somewhere new and undiscovered. That’s the journey of a writer. You never know where the next word will take you. Hopefully, together, we can experience some amazing new adventures at OnlyInYourState.
Sometimes you just want a leisurely walk on a beautiful nature trail to center your thoughts, connect with nature, or inspire your kids to share your love of the outdoors. If that’s the case Tecolote Nature Trail in Sandia Park, New Mexico is a wonderful choice.
It’s an easy trail perfect for beginners or those who simply love a walk with a diverse combination of shaded forest, lightly rocky trails, and amazing views from the top of the 8,806-foot peak.
Tecolote, a Spanish word of Nahuatl or Aztec origin, means "owl", which is a graceful and fitting name for this 2.5-mile out-and-back nature trail that is a local favorite for bird watching.
The Tecolote trail starts off with the rich scent and sight of wildflowers and flowering desert plants that pop with color in the spring, summer, and fall.
You’ll revel in the intoxicating scent of piñon, mahogany, oak, and juniper trees as you hike upon a bed of soft pine needles through the forested section of the trail.
The trail is easy to follow through lush green ground cover with the occasional section that traverses through cacti and desert plants. As long as you and your pets or children stay on the trail, anything poky or poisonous is easily avoided.
This little-known New Mexico natural trail is filled with exciting surprises like this small cave. It’s probably a good idea to peek in carefully in case it has some furry inhabitants but many hikers love to walk inside and pretend they are hibernating bears.
Stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding Cibola National Forest capture the spirit of why we love nature and give you a moment to catch your breath before heading back.
Every season has more to offer with rich greens in the spring to fiery red, gold, and yellow in the fall, making a trip to the Tecolote trail multiple times throughout the year a rewarding experience.
A winter stroll on the Tecolote Nature Trail when the late fall bronze and gold foliage is covered in a dusting of snow is just as beautiful as it is in the warmer months in New Mexico.
When it comes to exploring local New Mexico nature trails around the Sandia Park area this hidden gem stands out. Have you discovered other trails in the area you would suggest we visit? Leave a comment and share any beautiful spots you’ve had the pleasure of hiking.
If you are looking for a more challenging hike don’t miss this Sandia Peak hike also in the Cibola National Forest.
