There are dozens of charming small towns in New Mexico to explore. While many of these small towns are named after Spanish and Native American words and people, there are others that may make you scratch your head. Pie Town, New Mexico is one of these towns. Located along Highway 60 in Catron County, this is one town that is sweet and fascinating.
Welcome to Pie Town! This is actually not a town but an unincorporated community with just over 100 residents.
Native Americans lived in the area of present-day Pie Town for centuries. In the past several years, Ancestral Puebloan and Acoma pottery, an axe head, petrified wood, and even fossilized bones have been found in the area.
It wasn’t until the 1920s when present-day Pie Town was actually established, and at the time, it was a popular stopping place during cattle and sheep drives.
In the 1920s, Clyde Norman established a shop in the area to provide supplies for travelers, but he was also well-known for making dried-apple pies. Word quickly spread about the delicious pies in the community and people came from all over to take a bite.
