As you explore the beauty and attractions along the Turquoise Trail, (the remarkable scenic byway that connects Santa Fe and Albuquerque), there is one stop that you certainly will not want to miss: the Casa Grande Trading Post. Located in Cerrillos, this unique attraction features everything you need for the perfect day trip including animals, Cerrillos Turquoise, and interesting history. The Casa Grande Trading Post in New Mexico is much more than just a trading post. It is also a Cerrillos Turquoise Mining Museum and petting zoo.
The minute you drive up to the trading post, you’ll know you are in a unique location. The large adobe building was made with more than 65,000 handmade “mud” bricks. It truly is a fascinating sight.
Inside the trading post, give yourself plenty of time to browse the extensive inventory. All types of items are for sale including fine jewelry, pottery, rocks and minerals, dream catchers, and more.
The Cerrillos Turquoise sold at the trading post are mined at local mining claims. These stones receive their green color from the iron in the soil where the stones were mined.
After you've spent some time browsing the trading post, the Cerrillos Turquoise Mining Museum is a must-see attraction. The museum highlights the incredible mining history in Cerrillos. Some of the items found in the museum include pre-historic tools, 1800s mining equipment, and much more.
At the petting zoo, there are several animals to pet, watch, and feed including goats, chickens, and Coco the Llama. If you purchase some food at the petting zoo, these animals are likely to come right to you.
There is something for every member of your family at the Casa Grande Trading Post in Cerrillos. Be aware that some attractions, such as the museum, do require an additional fee.
