The Land of Enchantment is full of natural beauty, but some of our most incredible natural phenomenons often hide beneath the surface in caves deep below ground. Every evening after learning about these peculiar animals from an informed park ranger, you can see one of our most recognized caves erupt with thousands of bats as they take off overhead. This astounding one-of-a-kind experience is truly unlike anything you’ve ever seen, and it will take your breath away.
Every warm evening in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, you can experience a one-of-a-kind natural phenomenon.
The Bat Flight Program is a nightly event starting at 6:30p.m. where you can hear a ranger talk about bats, and then see as they fly out above your head.
This event happens every evening from May to October, and is completely free. You'll see the most bats in September and October as the baby bats that were born earlier in the summer begin to join the flight.
Electronic devices aren't allowed in the amphitheater or its surroundings, as researchers have found the bats are sensitive to sound and light and it can change their behaviors. To protect the bats, please keep all electronics in the parking lot.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park is located at 727 Carlsbad Caverns Hwy, Carlsbad, NM. The bat flight amphitheater can be found at the Natural Entrance, just a short walk from the visitors center.
For more information, you can check out the National Park Service website right here.
