Although there are dozens upon dozens of beautiful parks in New Mexico, this one bridge park offers a peek into how this city became the unique landscape it is today. After floods crashed over Silver City in the late 1800s, the map was never the same. This beautiful riverside park is within a ditch that was once Main Street, and now is home to incredible art, walkways, and bridges. A trip to this Silver City park is interesting and relaxing, and it’s sure to be your new favorite hideaway.
After floods hit Silver City in the early late 1800s, a giant ditch was made, and what's left behind is Big Ditch Park.
Silver City was built with high sidewalks due to the risk of floods, but a devastating flood in 1845 knocked out downtown Main Street, and a 55-foot deep ditch that was lower than the original street level is what remains.
This bridge park is a one-of-a-kind adventure, and the bridge that crosses over gives a glimpse into the past and how powerful the storm must have been.
There is art throughout the park that reminisces about what Silver City was before the flood, and how it's coming back to life. Make sure to stop and read the plaques on the history of the city.
For an interesting walk through history, beauty, and art, Big Ditch Park is the perfect peaceful getaway, and a unique adventure in the sweet city of Silver City.
Big Ditch Park is located at 199 E. Market St., Silver City, NM.
