Here in New Mexico, we know a thing or two about green chile cheeseburgers. Perhaps that’s because they were perfected here, first created by the iconic Blake’s Lotaburger in 1952. Today, this local chain continues to serve the very best green chile cheeseburgers in New Mexico — and possibly the world! Here’s more on the iconic restaurant that’s been serving up delicious food for over 65 years.
If you're a resident of New Mexico, you've likely seen more than a few of these friendly establishments around. You may not have known that the famous Lotaburger has been part of New Mexico's dining scene since the 1950s.
Today, Blake's Lotaburger boasts no less than 75 locations around the state. Yet it all started with one modest stand that opened up shop in July of 1952.
A WWII Navy Veteran by the name of Blake Chanslor moved from Texas to Albuquerque, where he opened his 230 square foot "Lota Burger" stand. It wasn't long before folks fell in love with what's now considered to be a southwestern staple: the green chile cheeseburger.
This New Mexican delicacy pairs authentic Hatch Valley green chile (which are grown specifically for Blake's!) with Angus beef patties, onions, tomatoes, cheese, and two buns that are toasted to perfection.
In 2006, Blake's Lotaburger made headlines when National Geographic named its famous burger as "The World's Best Green Chile Cheeseburger." If you've never sampled one, now's the time!
Blake’s Lotaburger has 75 locations throughout New Mexico. To find the one closest to you, be sure to visit the official website here. Have you enjoyed a green chili cheeseburger from Blake’s recently? We’d love to hear from you!
