If you’ve been hiking for a long time, you might consider yourself an expert hiker. However, even the best hikers know they have their limits, and know what trails might pose quite the challenge. Not all trails are for everyone. Luckily there are plenty of easy, even family-friendly hikes around New Mexico. But the one I’m going to tell you about today isn’t one of them. While we still consider the Holt Apache Trail the best hike near Glenwood, New Mexico, it’s not for everyone. Read on before you decide if you want to tackle the challenge of this remote and rugged trail.
Rated as "hard" by AllTrails, the Holt Apache Trail is a 20-mile out-and-back trek. If that doesn't phase you maybe this will -- the overall elevation gain on this trail is 6,213 feet!
While you have the choice of trekking just a portion of this trail, for those you prefer to complete it in its entirety, make sure you're physically able to. You'll also have to carry plenty of water, a first aid kit, and anything else you need with you. A sturdy pair of boots is also essential and hiking poles are recommended as well.
Aside from the difficulty of this trail through the Gila Wilnderness, it's a wonderful one to connect with nature. You'll find plenty of wildlife and birds around, and you may have some time to yourself.
If you plan on completing the Holt Apache Trail, it will take over 12 hours to complete. Not only is this a popular trek for hikers but backpackers as well, so consider camping while you're out here in the Gila Wilderness!
