New Mexico is not only home to some gorgeous scenery and incredible restaurants, but it is also a terrific place to retire. During your golden years, you want to live in a location where the cost of living is low, you can easily keep your mind and body active, there are nearby medical facilities, and you can rest and relax without a care in the world. While there are many cities throughout the Land of Enchantment to consider, here are seven that all individuals approaching retirement should consider.
No matter what your passion may be — spending time outside, art, photography, etc. — you’ll find it in Taos. This small town has less than 6,000 residents and more than 20% of the population consists of senior citizens. You can spend your time browsing the local art museums, capturing photos of the historic adobe buildings, or exploring the nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Los Lunas is a beautiful town with a rural feel. However, if you are aching to spend time in the city, Albuquerque is only 20 minutes to the north. You may not find as many senior citizens in this small town as you will in others on our list but this is a lovely place to spend your time. Los Lunas has plenty to do and see including museums, shopping, dining, wineries, and more.
If you are looking to retire in a location that has it all, Santa Fe is the city for you. This city has plenty of indoor attractions such as museums, recreation centers, and shopping. If you want to get outdoors and stretch your legs, there are many nearby hikes. Plus, state and national parks are just a short drive away. You also have the benefit of being near excellent medical facilities when you live in this New Mexico city.
Silver City is a popular place to retire due to the low cost of living. In fact, the cost of living in this small town is less than many other areas around the Land of Enchantment. Silver City is a small town with a population of less than 10,000. However, that doesn’t stop it from being a bustling place to live with many festivals, events, museums, and dining to enjoy.
Placitas is a small town with gorgeous views and much to offer. This Sandoval County town has less than 5,000 residents and is perfect if you are looking for a place to live that is quiet and offers a slower pace of life. Placitas also has a large demographic of senior citizens, making it easy to build friendships.
If you love the outdoors and plan to spend your golden years hiking, fishing, birdwatching, and more, Los Alamos must be at the top of your list. Los Alamos offers plenty of green space and boasts countless parks where you can spend your evenings. Plus, Los Alamos enjoys up to 300 days of sunshine each year, making it even easier to get outdoors and stay active.
The beautiful town of Ruidoso is another excellent location for retirement due to the low cost of living. In this area of New Mexico, there is plenty to do outdoors such as hiking and fishing and you will get to enjoy the beauty of all four seasons. Ruidoso also has something for everyone to keep you busy such as golf courses, historic sites, shopping, theatres, and delicious dining.
