There is one place in the Land of Enchantment that crams a whole lot of history into one area — Pecos National Historical Park. While designed to preserve the history of the incredible Pecos Valley, this national historical park is a must-visit destination. In fact, there is one trail — the Ancestral Sites Trail — that will make you feel like you are stepping into history. This trail will take you to one of the most fascinating sites in New Mexico.
The Ancestral Sites Trail is a 1.25-mile loop in Pecos National Historical Park in New Mexico. This is one of the more popular trails in this historical park.
As you walk on this hiking trail in New Mexico, you’ll come across several ancestral sites of the Pecos Pueblo. Centuries ago, the Pecos Pueblo was one of the largest and strongest pueblos in the region.
Not only will you enjoy a little physical activity but this is an educational hike. You can learn all about the area and the people who live here years ago. You can pick up a trail guide in the visitor center to learn even more as you walk along the large loop.
Not only will you see the site of the pueblo, but you will also come across several kivas as well. Kivas are underground ceremonial rooms and if you are physically able, you may even climb into one.
Next to the Pecos Pueblo is the site of the 1717 Spanish Mission Church. You can walk around this church and explore or just sit back and imagine what it might have been like to live here centuries ago.
