While the Navesink Twin Lights may not be the oldest lighthouse(s) in the U.S. (that honor goes to Sandy Hook Light), the site is special for several reasons. Read on for their 7 famous firsts.

The original Spermaceti Cove Life Saving Station was built in 1848 in Sandy Hook. In the 1950s, it was moved to the Twin Lights Historic Site. Inside, you'll find a small exhibit area with boats and other memorabilia. There is still a Spermaceti Cove Light Saving Station (No. 2) on Sandy Hook - this station was built in the 1890s.

The Fresnel Lens has been called "the invention that saved a million ships." A more efficient design than previous lenses, it is significantly thinner and lighter.
