Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency on Thursday for three New Jersey counties – Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester. The area has been ravaged by raging flood waters, leaving destruction in its wake. Property damage is in the millions, and over 140,000 residents were left without power. Many were forced out of their homes, with residents and pets being rescued by boat. Nearly 5 inches of rain fell in under 3 hours causing the Rancocas Creek to overflow. Westville, located along Big Timber Creek, is seeing the worst flooding its had since 1988. Bellmawr, Maple Shade, Mount Holly, and towns along the Cooper River were also affected. Lesser flooding occurred throughout the area, including Pennsauken, Burlington City, and Haddonfield.

Highways including I-295 were closed for hours, dozens of local roads were closed, and hundreds of drivers were trapped with nowhere to go. Many lost their vehicles. PATCO suspended all High-Speed Line service between Lindenwold and Broadway in Camden for several hours. Beloved businesses were affected including the Robin’s Nest in Mount Holly. Much of the state is unaware of the devastation in our southeast corner as we prepare for lake and shore trips this weekend, while waiting out our Friday morning storms.
