I’m always sharing facts and food with you, and the occasional event, but today is all about fun! As a lifelong New Jerseyan (minus two years of traveling), I’m very familiar with our seasons. If you’ve lived here for at least a year, you likely know that we’re lucky to have four – spring, summer, fall, and winter. But if you’ve lived here for a significant length of time, you know we actually have more. They may not be official, but this is what I’ve come up with. Let me know if you agree!
Happy Winter
Happy Winter begins on December 21st, the official start of the winter season. We're happy because the holidays are coming up and don't yet mind the cold much. We're dreaming of a white Christmas and enjoying cozy fires. It's a short season, lasting until mid-January. The holidays may be over, but we're living on leftovers, loving our gifts, and still sticking to our resolutions.
Never Ending Winter
When will it stop snowing? I'm freezing my...ears...off!!! These sentiments, and similar, are often echoed during Never Ending Winter. From mid-January to March, we're dreaming of warmer weather.
Maybe Spring
It's March! We've had a few warm days and we're feeling optimistic. It was 60 degrees on Saturday...
Second Winter
Ha! Fooled ya! (That's Mother Nature talking.) Here's some snow, just for fun. And right after I packed away my mittens. Rude! It's alright, April is fast approaching.
Pothole Season
It's cold, it's warm, it's wet...we're just hoping/praying that the streets don't look like this. Anyone else plan their routes around potholes? I hit a horrific one on the highway and I think my car actually cried. Maybe it was me...
Finally Spring
It's the end of April and our state is coming alive with color. We're comfortable in a cozy sweater and are heading out on adventures. Those adventures should include the Van Vleck House & Gardens in Montclair, pictured. It's an absolutely incredible place. While in the area, also check out the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens.
Unofficial Summer
This begins on Memorial Day Weekend and lasts until the calendar says it's summer. We're all at Wildwood, down in Cape May, partying in Seaside, with the family in Point Pleasant, enjoying the Atlantic City Boardwalk...you know the deal. Most of our shore time is spent at arcades, amazing eateries, amusement parks, and the like.
Actual Summer (Mostly)
This starts on June 21st, but ends on Labor Day Weekend, weeks before summer officially ends. We're still at the shore but the water is warmer. We're soaking up sun or splashing around in the waves, while also enjoying all the "Unofficial Summer" activities.
Shore Summer
Not everyone knows this season exists, but you sure do if you're a shore native. Labor Day Weekend has passed and only the locals remain. There's peace, quiet, and pretty sunrises without the crowds.
Feels Like Fall
It feels like fall, because it is. September is coming to a close but we haven't gotten to the best part of the season yet...
Foliage Fall
We get gorgeous shades of orange, yellow, and red here in New Jersey! This season runs from early October until late November. In addition to the fantastic foliage, we're enjoying farm fun - apple and pumpkin picking, hayrides, and corn mazes.
It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Winter
It's December 1st and winter is a few weeks away, but it sure is snowy. We love the fresh power, perfect for skiing, and everything looks so pretty.
So, what do you think? I want to know what you’d include in your list of New Jersey seasons!
