The Garden State may be small, but it’s the densest state in the United States. Roads crisscross our little state everywhere you look. However, if you’ve spent any time on the highways here, you know all roads are most definitely not created equal. Some long drives are little more than a simple journey along a highway dotted with rest stops and chain restaurants, of course. But we have plenty of amazing scenic drives in New Jersey, too.
One of our favorites is Route 40 in New Jersey. It’s also known as the Harding Highway, and it’s a quiet retreat through Salem County that will take you past some of the state’s best rural attractions. The main selling point of Rt 40 NJ is its stunning views of Sawmill Park. This unique county park is filled with not just natural beauty, but also with amazing works of art. The entire journey down Route 40 NJ covers about 54 miles, before terminating at either the Hamilton Mill or the Delaware Memorial Bridge, depending on which way you’re traveling. No matter what way you are heading, you’re in for some amazing views.
