There’s something to be said for the tried and true New Jersey restaurants in cities and bustling towns – the ones that see a steady stream of traffic and are adjacent to all kinds of shopping and entertainment. But some of the best restaurants in New Jersey are well off the beaten path, meriting a journey that’s just as exciting as the destination – and that’s certainly true for the Bayshore Crab House in Cumberland County. This unassuming little South Jersey restaurant serves some of the best seafood you’ll ever have, all in a rustic setting with beautiful rural scenery to go along with your mouthwatering meal.
Resting on the banks of the meandering Nantuxent Creek, the Bayshore Crab House is run by owner and chef Kenny Lore, who comes from a long line of oystermen and certainly knows his seafood.
You’ll know you’ve found the place when you spy the giant painted bull on the side of the red barn. In fact, the restaurant is also referred to as Bull on the Barn.
It may look unassuming from the outside, but beyond these doors lies an unforgettable culinary experience. You'll want to embrace the charming rural atmosphere of this truly middle-of-nowhere gem.
The decor inside gives off, as the restaurant itself puts it, “an eclectic Ralph Lauren meets Captain Ahab vibe." Oystering memorabilia, ship models, and more adorn the walls and give this South Jersey treasure a ton of character.
Each table or booth is uniquely decorated. There’s also seating available on the screened-in porch, so you can enjoy your meal with a relaxing view of the creek.
An array of classic seafood dishes are on the menu, but the crabs are definitely the star of the show. Try the South Jersey-style crabs, or the deviled crab cake.
Clams, shrimp, scallops, mussels, flounder, and more – there’s sure to be something to please any seafood lover. And of course, you’ve got to try the Delaware Bay oysters! But no matter what you choose, you really can’t go wrong - everything here is fresh and delicious, South Jersey seafood at its finest.
Please note that the restaurant is open seasonally, from May through October. Before you plan your visit, be sure to check the website for current hours.
