From the 1928 “Ghost Sniper” in Camden to the disappearance of Gary Grant, Jr. in 1984, New Jersey has had several disturbing mysteries that have remained unsolved over the years. One of the most well-known mysteries is the murder of Sigrid Stevenson.
Sigrid was a 25-year-old student at The College Of New Jersey (then Trenton State College) in 1977. The young pianist was working towards a master’s degree in music at the time of her death. Her body was found on Sunday, September 4th, 1977 on the main stage in Kendall Hall, beaten and bloodied.
It is believed that Sigrid had attended a performance in the music hall, and then stayed after to practice piano. Near midnight on the eve she was murdered, a security guard noticed her bike outside the building. Upon further investigation, he made a gruesome discovery.
Sigrid's body was found brutally bludgeoned on the stage, which was spattered with blood. She was lying naked, face down, with her hands bound. Her injuries were so severe that she was nearly unrecognizable, but it was clear that she was battered by a blunt object. The object, and the perpetrator, were never found.
Sigrid was born in California, but lived in New Jersey for some time as her father was a professor at Princeton. A free spirit, she had many friends, but few who would be considered close. She spent the summer before her murder hitchhiking across the US and Canada and may have been casually seeing several men. It does not appear that she was in a relationship at the time of her death. Some say that she was living with a volunteer fireman from Ewing Township, but not much is known about him. While he was questioned about her death, so were over 100 others, some twice. Still, the murder remains unsolved.
Strange happenings have been reported at Kendall Hall, from objects moving on their own to mysterious noises. Psychics and paranormal experts have investigated the site and say that her spirit lingers. If you believe in that sort of thing, it's really no surprise. Sigrid likely awaits the day her killer is caught - it is very likely that he (or she) is still alive.
