Rumor has it that a woman in the 1960s, known only as Miss Brown, forgot her room key and attempted to climb her way in. She fell to her death and never left. There have since been reports of vibrating beds, swaying furniture, and mysterious lights at this most haunted hotel in New Jersey.

2. Hotel Macomber, Cape May

It is said that there are multiple spirits haunting this centrally located boutique hotel in Cape May. Sightings of a shabbily dressed waitress in the dining and kitchen areas have been reported along with claims of moving silverware. Room 10 is said to be the summer home of a spirit from the 1940s who often loudly drags her trunk about. This room is certainly one of the most haunted places to stay in this hotel!

Built in 1814, the Union Hotel has been home to a significant amount of paranormal activity. Doors have been said to slam shut and bar stools have been seen spinning for no reason.

7. The Flanders Hotel, Ocean City

As one of the most haunted hotels on the beach, it has become fairly famous for its creepy history. Named after a cemetery in Belgium, this hotel once hosted covert crime boss meetings in its catacombs. It has also hosted several ghosts, the most famous of which is a young red-haired woman. There have also been reports of a small child and a middle-aged man haunting the premises. These spirits can be heard laughing throughout the building and have even been spotted by numerous guests.

Yes, there are haunted restaurants in New Jersey. Among the most haunted is The Cranbury Inn and here's why:

  • One of the oldest eateries in New Jersey, this haunted restaurant has quite a creepy résumé. This business was officially established in 1780 after the colonies declared their independence from Britain.
  • Records show that there was an Underground Railroad stop in the town of Cranbury, and many believe that the inn was this stop (there are different rumors swirling around about the inn possibly harboring captive slaves).
  • This restaurant dishes up some truly delightful fare, with a side of spooky. According to one of the owners, many unexplainable events have taken place over the years.
  • A pregnant employee had doors mysteriously swing open for her and some staff members insist they've gotten telepathic messages, warning them to turn off electrical fixtures.
  • When psychics stop by, they say the spirits are warm and welcoming - they enjoy (after) life at the inn.

 

What are the creepiest places in New Jersey?

For totally creepy vibes, visit the Old Tennent Cemetery and Church in Manalapan:

  • The area surrounding this historic cemetery was once the host of a bloody Revolutionary War battle - the Battle of Monmouth.
  • The church acted as a makeshift hospital, and both the building and grounds are said to be haunted.
  • According to legend, you can still see blood stains and saw marks (used for amputations) in the wood on some pews.
  • The cemetery itself is open 24 hours and has tombstones dating back 280 years.

 

Does New Jersey have any ghost towns?

New Jersey is home to numerous mining and milling ghost towns like the following:

  • Ong's Hat is an unincorporated community in Pemberton Township. The area can be seen on maps dating back centuries; and legend says that the town had just a handful of houses, along with a thriving dance hall. However, industry left the area and Ong's Hut/Ong's Hat slowly became abandoned. The last resident left the town in 1936, but not before some strange disappearances.
  • Another creepy ghost town is located in Harrisville. It's home to some remarkably well-preserved gristmill ruins, and is actually quite beautiful, in its own, haunting way.
