While New Jersey isn’t known for its mountains, we still have several impressive peaks. The most magnificent of all has got to be High Point. You’ll find the mountain 7 miles north of Sussex, near Montague.

High Point is the tallest peak of the Kittatinny Mountain Range, it is also the highest point (surprise!) in the state of New Jersey. At its summit, the mountain towers 1,803 feet above sea level.

A popular hiking destination, High Point is home to part of the Appalachian Trail, among others. You'll find over 50 miles of marked trails with varying difficulty levels. It is easy enough to drive to the top, but if you make the hike, the views of three states from the summit seem even more rewarding.

High Point is part of High Point State Park, which offers numerous recreational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy swimming on Lake Marcia, boating on Sawmill and Steenykill Lakes, fishing in numerous streams, and skiing at the cross country ski center. A nominal admission fee is charged from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

At the top of High Point is a 220-foot obelisk. The obelisk was built in 1930 as a war memorial. Guests can climb to the top for even more incredible views.

Sunsets and sunrises here are amazing, definitely not to be missed. Luckily, visitors can spend the night. There are 50 tent sites, two cabins, and a group cabin. Cabins accommodate groups of 6 and cost $65 per night. They offer full kitchens, private bathrooms and three bedrooms. Group cabins offer similar amenities but sleep 28 and will cost $155 per night.
