This Insane Waterpark From The 1980s Reopened In New Jersey... And You'll Want To Visit
Traction Park. Class Action Park. Accident Park. The “world’s most dangerous waterpark”… If you were a teen or twenty-something between 1978-1996, you probably remember this Vernon, New Jersey experiment in extreme. With its heart pounding thrill rides, there was no place like it in the world.

It all started when two "Alpine Slides" were added to the Vernon Valley–Great Gorge ski area to bring guests in during the off season. Visitors would ride the ski lifts up the mountain and slide down 2,700 feet in a joystick controlled cart. Four years after the slides opened, a 19-year-old was killed when his cart jumped off the track.
In 1982 there were two more deaths, a drowning in the wave pool and an electrocution on the Kayak Experience. In 1984, the park's developer plead guilty in an insurance fraud scam.

In 1985, the notorious Cannonball Loop slide (pictured) was added. The 100-foot-high slide caused countless injuries and was shut down after a short time by state safety officials. While the slide was open, over 100 injuries were reported, including 10 fractures.

Another confirmed drowning occurred in 1987 and by 1995 the park went bankrupt after countless lawsuits and citations for safety violations. In 1998, the park was reopened as Mountain Creek Waterpark and in 2014, Action Park was revived. After the massive success of a 2013 documentary on the park, owners wanted to capitalize on the press and nostalgia factor. This time though, the rides were much safer. The classic moniker only lasted two seasons and has been renamed Mountain Creek Waterpark as of 2016. "Action Park" did not resonate with the under 34 crowd... Still, the original owners (the Mulvihill family) are back.

Tracks have been added to the Alpine Slides and it has been renamed the Alpine Mountain Coaster - but it is just as thrilling as ever. The entire park is a haven for adventure seekers with rides like the Tarzan Swings (a classic attraction), H2-Oh-No and ZERO-G, the world's tallest double looping thrill slide. Recent reviews rave that it is the best waterpark in the world, and I can't disagree. If you're looking for some serious fun, this is the place to be.
