What do you think of when you think of New Jersey? I think of rich history, an abundance of entertainment options, a thriving shopping and dining scene, diversity, beaches and, of course, farmland. We are the Garden State, after all. One New Jersey town stands out for offering all of that and more. Morristown most certainly is the most “New Jersey” town in New Jersey. Read on to see why you won’t want to miss it.
Morristown is loaded with it. Start at the Ford Mansion, Washington's winter headquarters during the Revolutionary War. Next, head to Macculloch Hall, a mansion built in 1810 with period rooms, gardens & a collection of cartoonist Thomas Nast's work. Acorn Hall is another favorite, open to the public three days a week for tours.
In addition to your standard AMC Movie Theater, Morristown is home to the Mayo Performing Arts Center. You can enjoy a variety of live shows and musical performances here. Visit on January 31st for a special Hollywood FX show where you can go behind the scenes and learn the secrets of movie magic. Prefer gorgeous gardens? Head to the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, free and open to the public daily. For a family friendly museum, the Morris Museum is a top pick. Enjoy exhibits on history, geology, science and more.
There are plenty of places where you can find all sorts of goods and gifts. If you love all things New Jersey, don't miss out on Just Jersey, selling locally made and locally inspired goodies! You'll also find thrift shops, book shops, bridal boutiques and big department stores. Favorites include 23 South (selling gifts) and Jack Rabbit, stocked with all the running shoes you could ever need.
You'll find all sorts of cuisine, something I've always loved about New Jersey. Top restaurants in town include Rod's Steak & Seafood Grille (pictured, featuring restored train cars!), The Committed Pig (gourmet burgers including the famous Burgernut), and Macho Nacho (for yummy cheap eats). If you're craving Carribean cuisine, head to Hibiscus, while South + Pine is the perfect spot for creative American eats.
Just like the state of New Jersey, Morristown is quite diverse.
The town is approximately 46 percent White, 34 percent Hispanic, 14 percent Black and 4 percent Asian, with the rest of the residents identifying as "mixed race" or "other." White residents are a mix of Italian, Irish and German ancestries (among others). In addition, the town is fairly well educated, just like the Garden State overall. Diversity is part of what makes our state so great, and Morristown represents that quite well, though not the number one most diverse town in New Jersey (that would be Pennsauken, in Camden County).
Yes! They have sandy shores surrounding a lake beach at beautiful Lewis Morris County Park. You'll also find an inflatable obstacle course that kids and adults alike love.
And the most New Jersey town most definitely needs a farm!
Fosterfields Living Historical Farm is a 213.4-acre New Jersey and National Register Historic Site located in Morris Township. Open from April until the end of October, there's so much to do here...visit the farm animals, witness the farmer plowing or planting of the fields using antique machinery, and help perform daily tasks, such as collecting eggs, grinding corn to feed the chickens, and cleaning the harness. Speak with one of the knowledgeable docents dressed in period clothing to learn more details about the lifestyle of those who lived and worked on the farm. Don't forget to tour the interactive Transportation Exhibit filled with antique automobiles!
