Atlantic City’s history is fascinating! It was a very popular place for bootleggers and outlaws, particularly during Prohibition. A handful of the former speakeasies and elite “supper clubs” still exist today, and if you want to enjoy a gourmet meal in a unique and historic atmosphere, plan a dinner out at the Knife and Fork Inn.
The Knife and Fork Inn is one of the most storied restaurants in Atlantic City, and it remains a local favorite for food, drink, and ambiance.
It was founded in 1912 as a private club, and in 1927 - just before prohibition - it rebranded as a supper club geared towards attracting the high rollers of Atlantic City.
Not surprisingly, the Knife and Fork made it through prohibition just fine - as did most of Atlantic City, thanks to wheeling, dealing, and bootlegging.
The Knife and Fork Inn had lots of famous visitors over the years, including Bob Hope, Steve Wynn, and James Florio. Most people who come by to dine at the "famous" Knife and Fork Inn, though, are here looking for tales of Enoch "Nucky" Johnson.
When HBO's Boardwalk Empire launched, locals quickly realized that the supper club alluded to in many of the scenes was based on the Knife and Fork Inn. That should be no surprise to histroains, though, because the real Knife and Fork Inn was a favorite of the crime boss and Atlantic City racketeer.
Today, the Knife and Fork Inn serves up some of the best food in Atlantic City in a truly historic atmosphere.
When you dine here, be sure to come with a big appetite! You'll want to have a couple of courses, because the appetizers and small plates are so delicious.
If you want to pretend you're living large like the bosses of Atlantic City, why not order the lobster?
Or, perhaps, treat yourself to a steak. Each bite is sure to be juicy and melt-in-your-mouth tender.
Hope you saved some room for dessert! There's nothing like a sweet treat to wrap up your indulgent meal.
Oh, and by the way - since prohibition is in the past, you can order the perfect wine to pair with your meal.
