The Garden State always has a lot going on. You never know exactly what you’ll find in the local news, and it certainly keeps things interesting. From shocking to terrifying or simply amazing, here are the most insane things happening right now in New Jersey.
1. Someone in New Jersey just got a LOT richer.

There was only one jackpot winner in last night's $429 million Powerball drawing. The winning ticket was sold in New Jersey and the winning numbers (5/7/2016) were 5, 25, 26, 44 and 66 with a Powerball of 9.
2. A crosswalk sting in Teaneck.
Cops posed as average pedestrians on Queen Anne Road this week to ticket drivers who did not stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. Ticket after ticket was issued, and while it may not seem like a serious offense, nearly 350 pedestrians were killed on New Jersey roads in the past two years.
3. Truck fire leads to soapy situation.
A tractor trailer traveling on Route 78 through Union Township overturned earlier this week, spilling liquid laundry detergent into a local brook. The water turned into a sea of suds and dead fish were found along the banks. While the stream feeds into the Musconetcong River, no immediate issues have arisen.
4. Mary Lee makes her way to New Jersey.
The 16-foot Great White Shark was first tagged in 2012 off the coast of Cape Cod. She's since traveled much of the Eastern Seaboard and seems to be making her way back to Southern New Jersey. To track her location, you can follow @MaryLeeShark on Twitter - she has over 20,000 followers.
5. Is New Jersey the next North Pole?
Not quite, but a recent study showed that we could soon be experiencing severe snowstorms more frequently due to changing weather patterns in Greenland. The entire East Coast could be affected, and changes are already noticeable with nearly half of the area's biggest blizzards in the past 150 years occurring after 1990.
6. Let sleeping clerks lie?
Police are searching for a suspect who stole $1500 from a Lyndhurst liquor store while the clerk was sleeping. It took several days for store owners to realize they had been burglarized, but they were able to secure several shots of the suspect from security footage.
7. Convict escapes near end of sentence.
Convicted killer, Arthur Buckel, escaped from Bayside State Prison (not pictured) earlier this week. He was originally believed to be in Barnegat but his whereabouts are currently unknown. The strangest part of this story is that Mr. Buckel would have been eligible for parole in just two weeks.
8. State sandwich standoff.
A bill was recently introduced to establish an official Garden State sandwich. It only makes sense that New Jersey's state sandwich would be... this. But what do we call it? Lawmakers are torn between Taylor Ham and Pork Roll. A point of contention throughout the state, this will surely be a legal battle for the ages.
9. Wild turkey takeover.
While there have been several slightly scarier stories in the news recently (a terrified mail-woman surrounded by a flock of wild turkeys), this one is a bit more humorous. Watch the short video featuring funny footage of a Mt. Laurel turkey in love... with a car.
Which of these stories did you find most shocking? What other crazy stories have you seen in the New Jersey news lately?
