The highlight of any hiking trail is the view, right? Well, not necessarily. Sure, an amazing view will make your jaw drop, but a good trail could have all sorts of unique features.
Just consider this trail in New Jersey . A moderately trafficked loop trail in Norvin Green State Forest, this hike will take you past multiple abandoned mines, including one you can explore in certain months.
The Roomy Mine via Highlands, Roomy Mine, and Wyanokie Trails Loop is such an interesting and unique trail.
Located in Norvin Green State Forest, New Jersey, this loop trail is two and a half miles long and filled with surprises.
The trail, which has an elevation gain of 564 feet, does lead to some pretty viewpoints.
But while you're certainly climbing up some steep sections, the nice view isn't what it's all about it.
You'll walk past a pretty bridge over a peaceful creek.
No need to get wet here!
Then, you'll come across the Blue Mine.
It's such an eerie but cool sight! You can't explore this cave, though -- it's always flooded.
Eventually, though, you'll find an abandoned mine you can explore: Roomy Mine.
We almost feel scared of going in -- but if you do, you're rewarded with an interesting cave experience.
However, you can't always explore Roomy Mine. It's forbidden to enter from Sept 1 to Apr. 30.
There is a good reason for that: You shouldn't disturb the hibernating bats.
However, all other times of year, it makes for a fun side excursion. You'll want a flashlight and some head protection to explore these rocks, though.
Safety first! But a beautiful sight does await you.
Just keep in mind, this is a moderate trail. It can be steep, rocky, and slippery in some parts.
And make sure to survey the map before heading off!
The trail is accessible all year-round and allows dogs, although they must be leashed.
