New Jersey has a rich mining history and abandoned mines are still hidden below the surface of our state… Schuyler Copper Mine in North Arlington dates back to 1715 and was one of the first copper mines in the United States. The Hibernia Iron Mines span over two miles in and around Rockaway, New Jersey and once served as the largest bat hibernaculum in New Jersey, with as many 30,000 bats each winter.
