Picturesque Hacklebarney State Park can be found in Long Valley, approximately 40 miles west of Newark, New Jersey.
Good fishing is available year-round here in the Black River, which flows through a glacial valley. In the spring and fall, the river is stocked with trout. Brook trout is the state fish of New Jersey.
Hacklebarney State Park includes several hiking trails covering five miles of scenic terrain at the northern edge.
The trails vary in length and difficulty. You may encounter some fly fishermen as you follow the path.
The rocky wetlands provide a home for deer, black bears, foxes, and over 100 species of birds, among other wildlife.
Behold the behemoth and little bitty boulders, beckoning the hikers who pass to have a climb.
Before becoming a popular fishing and hiking destination, Hacklebarney State Park was an iron ore mining site.
Rinehart Brook and Trout Brook converge in the park at the Black River, creating a series of small waterfalls for your viewing pleasure.
Some of the waterfalls are visible from the hiking trails. You can bring your leashed pup with you too.
In the winter, you can try your hand at some cross-country skiing.
Bring your skis and forge your own trail.
