When thinking about New Jersey, the word “Countryside” doesn’t often come to mind. We’re the most densely populated state in the country – and we like it that way! But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some wonderful little spots to enjoy nature, and one rural restaurant in New Jersey offers the best of both worlds. Gronsky’s Milk House, an old-school diner and ice cream parlor in High Bridge, offers classic American food with some unique twists – and decorations. It’s only feet away from a beautiful riverside view, and many diners choose to eat their meal outside. It might be a pretty long drive to Gronsky’s Milk House in High Bridge – unless you’re on your way to a day of recreation at the Spruce Run Reservoir – but wherever you come from, we can guarantee it’ll be worth the trip.

Where Can I Find The Best Rural Restaurants In New Jersey?

These three restaurants are all even more out of the way than Gronsky's Milk House, but all are worth the drive!

  • Black Forest Inn, located in a heavily wooded version of Stanhope, will take you much further than New Jersey - this is the state's best German restaurant, and the entire place is a lavishly themed recreation of an old Bavarian hunting lodge. Inside, amid the stained glass windows, you'll dine on classic European fare including sausages, sauerbraten, and some of the best potato pancakes we've ever tasted. Make sure to save room for dessert - the apple strudel here is worthy of breaking out in song amid a backdrop of the Alps.
  • The Red Eyed Crab is found in one of the least-known towns in all of New Jersey - Port Norris, located at the southern border of the state far from Cape May. This area used to be a top oyster-fishing destination, so it's no surprise that the specialty here is shellfish. Located in an old wooden building covered with crab-themed decorations, this no-frills seafood shack serves up some amazing fried and steamed fish and seafood, plus plenty of options for the landlubbers in your party. The unique art around the place makes it worth a visit for the decor and the food.
  • The Circle in Newton might just be the most unexpected dining destination in the whole state, located far down a country road in a converted old farmhouse. And inside you'll find ... a fine dining restaurant worthy of any big city. The chefs are New York-trained, the menu is seasonal and always innovating, and the entire place has an intimate feel that's hard to find in New Jersey. Most of the ingredients are local too, including vegetables and dairy. If you see the root beer float on the dessert menu, get ready for a delicious experience.
