Typically, peak New Jersey fall foliage occurs around the middle of October each year, though the colors tend to hang around until early November before the leaves fall and the trees are left bare for the winter. If you want to catch a glimpse at the beautiful colors of the season, here are our favorite spots to catch brilliant and beautiful fall foliage in New Jersey.
1. Ken Lockwood Gorge
Ken Lockwood Gorge Wildlife Management Area, Raritan River Rd, Califon, NJ 07830, USA
The Gorge is a Wildlife Management Area that's pretty accessible. The trail is a flat, wide dirt path that follows the South Branch of the Raritan River on the Columbia Trail. The variety of trees along the gorge, plus the beautiful rushing water, makes this an idyllic
fall destination in New Jersey .
2. Round Valley Reservoir
Round Valley Reservoir, Clinton Township, NJ 08833, USA
Round Valley never disappoints, no matter the season! In the autumn, though, the scenery is top notch. You don't have to stray far from the car to find scenes like the one below, but the network of trails around the reservoir means you can make this a longer trip along the water if you choose. Round Valley Reservoir is a great fall destination for more than foliage, too -- did you know this is one of the
most haunted spots in New Jersey ?
3. Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area
Mt Tammany Red Dot Trail, Kittatinnies Region, Hardwick Township, NJ 07825, USA
What can we say about the
Delaware Water Gap that we haven't said before? This corner of northwestern New Jersey is remarkable, and the views of the Delaware River and into Pennsylvania are breathtaking on an early Fall morning.
4. Ramapo Mountain State Forest
Ramapo Mountain State Forest, Wanaque, NJ 07465, USA
You'll have to hike a bit to get to Ramapo Lake, but this view is worth it! We love sitting on the rocky shoreline and looking for wildlife with an autumn backdrop. After you get to the take, continue on to find a stunning
abandoned castle in New Jersey at the top of the ridge.
5. Hacklebarney State Park
Hacklebarney State Park, 119 Hacklebarney Rd, Long Valley, NJ 07853, USA
Hacklebarney State Park is one of our favorite destinations for fall scenery. There's a moderate trail through the park that showcases waterfall after waterfall, and the dense forest provides a stunning backdrop that's bursting with color.
