If you grew up in the Garden State, you may be familiar with the Fairy Tale Forest. Located in Oak Ridge, it brought fairy tales to life for generations of children. Closed over a decade ago, restoration efforts have been underway for some time. If you’ve lived in the southern side of the state, you may be more familiar with Storybook Land, an equally enchanting (and still open) theme park. While both are wonderful destinations, they focus on fantasy. If you’re looking for a real-life fairy tale, head no further than Clinton.
This photo highlights how gorgeous the town of Clinton is. Right on the Raritan River and surrounded by rolling hills, the scenery is spectacular... The little waterfall is just icing on the cake. Home to many historic buildings, visitors will also enjoy the architecture. Two buildings, in particular, stand out.
The Red Mill is one of the most photographed buildings in America.
The Red Mill is a 4-story grist mill that can be found on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built around 1810 as an industrial mill and has served several roles over the years, including a wool processing plant, a peach basket factory, and a textile mill. It now operates as part of a museum complex with several surrounding buildings. Due to its dangerous past (milling wasn't always easy work) and several deaths on the property, it is believed to be haunted. One thing is for sure - it's hauntingly beautiful, drawing photographers from all over to be featured in books, portfolios, calendars and more.
The Hunterdon Art Museum is housed in a 19th century stone mill that is itself a work of art. Inside, you'll find a collection of contemporary art that's sure to inspire whimsy. Exhibits are always changing and currently include impressive displays of woodwork and beadwork. If you're interested in learning how to create, the Hunterdon Art Museum also offers classes and workshops that will help you make the world a bit more beautiful through your work.

Fairy tales go hand in hand with books. They are stories, after all.
If you'd like to immerse yourself in a good story, visit the Clinton Book Shop. Serving the local community for decades, they are open daily for your perusing pleasure. They offer signed copies, used books, book clubs and more. With a sizable selection, there's always something new and exciting to read.
And there's nothing like a good meal to leave you with that "Happily Ever After" feeling.
Though Clinton may be small, you'll find a variety of good eats. The Clean Plate Kitchen offers waterfront dining in warmer months and healthy options (including vegan choices) all year long. With a kid-friendly menu that includes free range chicken fingers, everyone can enjoy a meal here. Just Chill Frozen Desserts & Creperie, Baja Burrito, Ye Old Sub Base, and Christie's Artisan Bread & Pastry shop are other favorites.
I remember the first time I visited Clinton. I walked down Main Street and approached the river in awe – it was just as wonderful as I’d imagined. I picked up a few gifts at the local Hallmark, stopped for some sweets at the Clinton Fudge Company, and relaxed by the waterfront. If you’re looking for a day trip destination, I’d highly recommend it, especially in the spring or fall. For more fairy tale worth spots in New Jersey, check out this list.
