Sometimes you don’t have to go far from a big city to find a beautiful, easy hike that will reward you with breathtaking views. Just outside of West Orange, New Jersey, is a popular 3.4-mile hiking trail that is open year-round and is filled with natural beauty all the way to the park, where you can catch stunning skyline views of Manhattan and Newark. You’re welcome to bring your dog, but they must be kept on a leash.
The trail map will help you plan out where you would like to go with several other nearby trails available for you to traverse. The Eagle Rock Red Trail starts in the bottom left area and continues along Crest Drive.
Most of the trail is nicely wooded, with the wind in the trees and the sounds of birds making it a comfortable, relaxing stroll. It's amazing to think that several big cities are just a few short miles away.
Thankfully, several benches are dotted along the trail to provide rest and keep an eye out for birds and other wildlife. Deer and squirrels are often seen along this trail.
The park contains a statue dedicated to over 350 search and rescue dogs that sought to locate survivors in the rubble of the 9/11 attack. The ash was so thick that they were unable to do so. They provided comfort and respite to the workers who were struggling tirelessly to save people.
A peaceful, faraway view of the Newark skyline is a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. Seeing it from this perspective can make many of life's problems feel smaller.
Eagle Rock Red Trail Loop is beautiful all year round, with the trees changing colors in the fall and a lovely snowscape in winter. While you’re in the area, be sure to try out some of the 7 oldest restaurants in New Jersey and find some perfect getaway bed and breakfasts.
