New Jersey is mainly known for its coveted ocean beaches, but there’s far more to the Garden State than its shores. And while we have some pretty challenging waterfall hikes, the tallest waterfall in NJ is easily accessible from the parking lot. If you have yet to spend time at Buttermilk Falls, we’ll give you a few good reasons to explore the area.
Have you been to Buttermilk Falls lately? We highly recommend you visit the tallest waterfall in NJ at least once. If you simply love a good waterfall like we do, there are plenty more wonderful falls in the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area.

What are some waterfall hikes in New Jersey?
New Jersey has plenty of natural spaces to get out and enjoy a hike or two. Many of these trails lead to a heavenly oasis where you can relax near a soothing cascade. Here are a few waterfall hikes in New Jersey we think you'll love:
- Waterfall Trail near Lake Todd, Oakland, NJ: This cool waterfall trail in the Ramapo Mountain State Forest takes you to the Ramapo Overlook by Lake Todd. Simply called the Waterfall Trail, this 2.2-mile hike is perfect for an afternoon hike with family or a furry friend (or both, sorry Uncle Larry). Another interesting feature of this hike is the old stone ruins of a mansion built in the early 1900s. You'll find the ruins as you top Fox Hill.
- Chikahoki Falls, Bloomingdale, NJ: While Buttermilk Falls is impressive, sometimes you want to enjoy a quiet adventure. From the Otter Hole Parking Lot in the Norvin Green State Forest, you'll begin this short trek that takes you first to Otter Hole Falls and then to Chikahoki Falls. Both waterfalls are stunning and offer you a chance to enjoy a quiet spot in nature. On a hot summer day, Chikahoki Falls has the perfect swimming hole to cool off in.
- Tillmans Trail, Branchville, NJ: Another fun trail that leads to several small waterfalls is located in the Flatbrook Fish and Wildlife Management Area. It's a 1.6-mile out-and-back trail with a cool section of wooden boards to help you cross the sometimes muddy ground around the rapidly flowing waters of Tillman Brook. While there isn't a huge plunging waterfall, there are several smaller falls and sections of rapids throughout the hike. If you hike with pets, there are plenty of spots where they can cool off with a quick run through pools of water.
The fun doesn't need to stop with these three hikes. Make sure you add a few of our favorite New Jersey hikes to your bucket list. Before you head out, grab a map from AllTrails+.
