The White Mountain National Forest has no shortage of natural beauty, from its windswept open summits to its secluded wilderness areas and all of the colors in between. There are also plenty of lakes, ponds, and rivers to explore. Some of these are connected to scenic waterfalls that tumble down from the mountain ridges and one of the most spectacular routes to see some of these falls is in Franconia Notch State Park. While this rugged slice of the White Mountains is absolutely gorgeous, there’s one Franconia Notch waterfall hike that is a little extra special…and is aptly named for the numerous cascades you’ll encounter along the way.

The hike begins at the Old Bridle Path/Falling Waters trailhead in Franconia Notch. The trailhead can be reached from either side of the highway. This is a very popular spot, especially in summer, and hikers are urged to arrive early to secure parking. To reach the waterfalls, follow the blue-blazed Falling Waters Trail.

Alternatively, a seasonal hiker shuttle (fee required) runs to and from this trailhead from the nearby Cannon Mountain. Parking is strictly prohibited along the highway.
This tour of the waterfalls and cascades along Falling Waters Trail requires a hike of 2.6 miles round-trip with 850 feet of elevation gain.

As its name suggests, Falling Waters Trail is a scenic route along waterfalls and cascades and is used as part of a long and strenuous loop over Franconia Ridge, one of the most popular hikes in the region. But you don't need to visit one of the summits to enjoy the watery beauty.

At around 0.7 miles, just after crossing Dry Brook (use caution at times of high water), Falling Waters Trail passes Stairs Falls, a beautiful cascade.

The main attraction along Falling Waters Trail is Cloudland Falls. The trail approaches the base of this 80-foot cascade, then climbs beside it. At times of high water, this is a truly spectacular spot. Use caution crossing the base of the falls as the ledges will be slippery. If you are not continuing along the trail, this will be the turnaround point.

Some falls can be enjoyed up close, while others can only be admired from a distance. Be prepared for both if the weather allows!
Several other waterfalls can be seen along the trail, including Swiftwater Falls and numerous unnamed cascades flowing from branches of Dry Brook.
