Winter doesn’t have to mean the end of outdoor adventures. In fact, some of the fun here in New Hampshire is even better when the temps go down. The freezing lakes and ponds as well as snow on the trail and trees make for an atmosphere that you just won’t find in warmer months. So, the next time you’re feeling stuck inside, consider heading outdoors to experience some of the best that the state has to offer. Including this fun hike!
One of the most lovely little waterfalls in the state can be found near Gorham. Thompson Falls is a beauty throughout the year. In the spring and summer you'll find t surrounded by greenery.
In the winter the trail is likely to still be covered in snow despite other hikers, but that's a big part of the fun! Just be sure to have the right footwear. Crampons are a good idea depending on just how cold and icy things are.
And while the ultimate goal is reaching the falls, the route is full of views. The river should still be running and when the surrounding rocks are covered in snow the atmosphere is super-special.
If the weather is on the warmer side you should begin to hear the waterfall as you get closer. But if it's cold you'll probably find it completely frozen!
And if you love it, remember to check it out in other seasons as well. There's a ton of fall foliage to enjoy during autumn and those lush green trees offer the perfect shade in the spring and summer!
The Thompson Falls Trail can be accessed year-round, but you’re likely to find the least snow and ice between March and October. Dogs are allowed to adventure with you, just remember to keep them on a leash while on the trail. You can learn more about the route and how to find it by checking out alltrails.com.
