New Hampshire may be one of the oldest states in the nation, but when it comes to castle ruins America generally isn’t the best place to look. You might be surprised, therefore, to learn that we have some fascinating and beautiful castle ruins right here in New Hampshire. If you haven’t been, add it to your list!
Head to Castle Road in Chesterfield to see one of the most unexpected sites in New Hampshire for yourself.
You'll find a parking lot for Mme. Sherri's Forest, and from there it's just a short hike to the castle ruins.
The story of the ruins dates back to the 1920s, when Broadway costume designer Antoinnette Sherri came to build a summer home after her husband died. She actually lived in a smaller home nearby, but held many extravagant parties in the castle-like building she had constructed.
Madame Sherri's money soon ran out, and the castle fell into disrepair. In 1962, it burned down, leaving only a foundation and a staircase.
Wandering around is eerie and fascinating - listen closely and you might just hear the sounds of parties of old.
The stairs are a perfect place for photos - just be careful!
