Over the course of 2020, we’ve watched some of our favorite local spots close down temporarily or close down altogether. Each time it’s hard to feel like the fabric of our small towns is changing. But as hard as it is to watch some spots close, we couldn’t be happier when we see others still open and finding a way to make things work. This little spot hasn’t had it easy, but they’re open and we think they’re worth a visit.
The South Actworth Village Store opened its doors over 150 years ago, just as the Civil War was ending. The town of South Acworth was a busy mill town and having a community shop was important. The store became a beloved institution. And, it's continued that way all these years!
But, things haven't always been easy. The last year and the raging pandemic has been hard on the small shop and there have been days when continuing to operate seemed impossible.
This is even harder to think about when you consider just how many events and activities have been hosted here. Anyone who's attended a classic car night or live music in the afternoon can attest to that.
For a while it looked like the village store would have to close its doors at the end of the year. But with the help of the community, a volunteer manager has been found and a local group will work to find a way to make sure the store thrives in the future.
Today the store is located within the old Union Hall Building. It has tons of character and you'll be hard-pressed to find a more quintessential New England general store in the region.
Beyond being a lovely place to visit, they also carry a variety of things you need! From snacks, which are necessary for any drive through the state's small towns to locally crafted gifts you're likely to leave with more than you planned.
We love that you can enjoy a treat inside. In fact, sticking around a while is what they hope you'll do. The staff here is friendly, just like the town.
So, come visit and spend some time. When it's warm we recommend some quiet time on the porch. And if there's any local business worthy of some support it's this one.
It's always nice to see people coming together to help a beloved local spot, but what this community has done to make sure the South Acworth Village Store can stay open is truly remarkable.
The South Acworth General Store is typically open daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can learn more about them by visiting their website or checking them out on Facebook. They can be reached on 603-835-6547.
