There’s certainly no shortage of nostalgia here in New Hampshire. From historic hikes to archaeological treasures, there’s so much history in little New Hampshire that we think it might be the only state you need to visit if you’re a true history buff! The best part of the state’s history is that it’s so local. Our tales might not matter to someone in California, but the history here means a lot to those who appreciate the state. That’s why we love this little piece of history in Moultonborough.
The Old Country Store in Moultonborough has so much history that they also call themselves a museum.
Records show that the original piece of land was first sold by General Jonathan Moulton to Samuel Burnham in 1777. The only thing included was a "barn frame thereon." Later it was sold in 1779 toGeorge Freese,w who records indicate was a "trader." At this point, it's believed that the store was the only building located in this part of town.
Today the store is owned by Jo Hayden, who purchased it from Steve and Cile Holden. The Holdens purchased it in 1972. When it came into their hands, the only two things inside were a peppermint puff in a lone jar and a pickle. Fun fact: The jar is still used today!
