One of the best parts of summer in New England is getting out on the water – particularly the ocean. We’re so blessed to have access to the seashore, but it’s not something we can take for granted. The health of the ocean is threatened by pollution, climate change, and more, and we in New Hampshire must take it upon ourselves to learn about these challenges and how we can combat them. A great first step is visiting the absolutely incredible museum in Rye that has dedicated itself to these issues, both through education and action. This is a perfect place for your whole family to visit this summer – and, as a bonus, it’s right on the water.
New Hampshire's Seacoast Science Center is located within Odiorne Point State Park, and as a non-profit is dedicated to educating New Hampshire's residents about the importance of protecting our natural environment.
The museum walks its talk – it's the home of the Marine Mammal Rescue Team, which helps distressed and stranded marine life along the New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts coasts. That incredible mission and experience means they have so much in the way of knowledge and passion to share with visitors. They also run some fantastic educational programs for kids and adults alike!
Kids who want to get really up close and personal can even reach into the touch tanks, where they'll find creatures including sea stars and even a chain catshark!
You’ll find the Seacoast Science Center inside Odiorne Point State Park at 570 Ocean Boulevard, Rye, NH 03870. Visit their website to learn more and plan your visit!
