There are many foods we think of when imagining what to eat in New England and most of them involve seafood. We’re not upset about that, but we do want to take a moment to remember that there are many more things to eat in New Hampshire than just fried clams and lobster. In fact, we think this one particular restaurant does a pretty bang-up job at slinging some of the best, most comforting sandwiches in the state!
Cheese Louise is a completely student-owned eatery with two New Hampshire locations.
You'll find one in North Conway at the Setter's Green shopping mall and another in Conway just off the Kanc. Two grilled cheese spots in one small state? You betcha! And once you've tried it, you'll be wishing there were more.
What began as a food truck to make some extra money between semester at college has turned into a restaurant empire! Well, maybe not quite an empire yet, but they could be on their way. The menu is simple, but filled with unique options like "The Baconator" pictured here. It features crisp applewood smoked bacon, Cabot Cheddar and Muenster cheese. This is a thing of beauty for meat-lovers.
Another mainstay menu item is "The Southern Hipster." A variation on the Baconator, this grilled cheese has all the same stuff plus housemade guacamole.
They also recently debuted "The Clawbster," which is essentially a lobster roll grilled cheese. It's made with Maine lobster with Cabot Cheddar and deliciously soft white bread.
To keep things interesting they also add specials to the menu. You might find something like this pizza grilled cheese which has mozzarella, pepperoni, and marinara sauce on their house-made English Toasting Bread.
Or, maybe they'll bring back this popular special! The “No Porkin’ Way” seems a lot like a pulled pork grilled cheese, except there's no pork to be found. Instead they use shredded sweet potatoes and caramelized onions marinated in BBQ sauce. They often have vegetarian options. And every grilled cheese can also be made on gluten-free bread.
Cheese Louise has two New Hampshire locations. Hours might change, but right now it looks like both the North Conway Settler’s Green location and the Conway location on the Kanc are open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can learn more about them, check out the menu, and keep track of when they open for the season on their website. You can also follow them on Facebook. They can both be reached on 603-662-8230.
