Polar Caves in Rumney, New Hampshire is an all-day adventure where you can hike through nine different granite caves and then pet Fallow Deer in the Animal Park. These tiny, adorable deer are joined by many friendly ducks who absolutely love treats. Nestled in the White Mountains, this park has been operating since 1922 and lets you experience caves formed by the last Ice Age. The caves have whimsical names like Polar Pinch, Orange Crush, and Lemon Squeeze.

When you arrive, you are greeted by the Main Lodge which was recently renovated and has a rustic, log-cabin style to welcome you in. The mist rising from behind the treeline gives a sense of mystery.

The lodge has a gift shop packed with souvenirs including local maple syrup and other New Hampshire-made goodies, gorgeous geodes, pewter figurines, stuffed plush animals, clothing, several flavors of in-house fudge, and so many other things to remember this trip by.

You can reach the nine glacial caves via these wooden stairways. Due to the structure of this site, accessibility is limited to those who can climb these stairs. If this is you, make sure you have a warm jacket for what comes next.

Each cave has its own special mysteries to explore. This one contains beautiful Pegmatite crystals, some of the largest yet discovered. Pegmatite is a mixture of crystals mostly formed of quartz, mica, and feldspar.

After your trek through the caves, you can relax and spend time petting and feeding these sweet little deer. The park sells corn that you can feed them with and they're happy to be petted as you feed them. The ones with horns look like tiny reindeer. Be sure not to forget the ducks!

Polar Caves Park is open 9am-4pm every day. Feel free to bring your own lunch and have a picnic at their picnic area or in one of the gazebos. There are also several hiking trails with stunning views of New Hampshire’s natural beauty. While you’re in Rumney, NH, be sure to also visit beautiful Quincy Bog for easy hikes through local wetlands.
