Incorporated in 1781 and after several name changes, the name Sunapee was settled upon. Its origins come from the Algonquian words "suna" (goose) and "apee" (water).

Lake Sunapee is the dominant attraction in this area. With a shoreline of about 70 miles, the lake contains 11 named islands.
