When it comes to New Hampshire hikes, the Presidential Range gets the most attention, along with Mount Monadnock and Mount Cardigan. But if you want a change of scenery, or are looking for a short hike with big rewards, head up north to Pittsburg, where you’ll find an absolutely lovely trail that’ll take you up Mount Magalloway, a small peak tucked away in the under-appreciated Lake Francis State Park.

As you drive up to Mount Magalloway, you'll notice that it doesn't rise all that high over the surrounding landscape – making it a relatively accessible hike. Even with its smaller height, the hike offers some of the best views you could ask for.

The moderate loop trail that takes you to the peak is a total of 2.1 miles up and back, so you won't have to hike too long to get the reward of the peak. At the same time, it's definitely long enough to be a good workout!

There are plenty of campsites in Lake Francis State Park, but if you want something really special you can reserve the old watchmen's cabin on Mount Magalloway overnight through New Hampshire State Parks. You'll want to book this one far in advance!
