There are plenty of incredible hikes in New Hampshire – from short walks on rail trails to epic mountain climbs. We think this one stands out for its incredible scenery – you’ll truly feel that you’re very far from home while right here in your New Hampshire backyard.
Head to Alton to find Mount Major, a 1,785 foot mountain with views that outmatch those of many much larger mountains.
Take the 3.8 mile Mount Major and Brook Trail Loop for a pleasant, moderately challenging hike. There are a few scrambly areas and streams to cross, but nonetheless this is a great family trail.
Keep your eyes peeled on the way up and you might just spot an Eastern newt like this juvenile, known as a red eft.
When you get to the top, you'll be rewarded with the most magnificent view you can imagine of Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding mountains.
In the fall, the foliage will astound you.
The views are truly remarkable in any season - and if you catch them at golden hour so much the better.
With this hike, you're not far from civilization - but you'll feel like you've left all the stress of the daily grind far, far behind.
