If you’ve lived most of your life in New Hampshire you probably have a good sense of where you like to spend the most time. Some people love the coast, while others prefer the forested inland areas. Us? Well we like anything that makes us feel at home! That’s why we love the state’s small towns so much. And looks like we’re not alone. Oprah recently named a few towns in New Hampshire to her favorites list and this one is worth exploring.
Keene, located in Cheshire County, offers a variety of different activity for all sorts of people with different interests.
The town dates back to 1735 when Colonial Governor Jonathan Belcher provided land in the area to 63 different settlers. The price? A measly five pounds! Over the years the town has become a go-to destination for people looking for a lovely place to settle down as well as have fun for a weekend.
In addition to being a lovely place to stroll, there's actually a ton to do and see! Make sure to stop by The First Church, which was built in 1786 before being moved and renovated in the 19th century. Today, it's on the National Register of Historic Places where it earned a spot in 1982 and it's great for photos.
Keene was also once home to the large Jack O' Lantern festival in the country. While the even no longer takes place, there's still a wonderful Halloween and autumn spirit here.
If you're looking for ways to enjoy the outdoors here in Keene, check out the Cheshire Rail Trail. The 20-mile trail can be enjoyed year round. You can choose to begin or end your portion of the trail in Keene, but either way make sure to save time for a meal!
If you have kids in town, check out the Cheshire Children's Museum. This activity-focused museum is great for both kids and adults. It's totally interactive and offers an entire day of fun.

If you love art, consider a stop at the Colonial Theater. This local institution has been around since 1924 and, as with many local theaters, things are tough right now. You can support them by buying gift certificates or tuning into one of their live performances online.
