The Little Known Observatory In New Hampshire With Views That Are Second To None

When you hear the word “observatory,” you probably picture giant telescopes and starry skies. This amazing observatory in New Hampshire can definitely provide those stars, but you’ll also get the chance to watch hawks soar through the air. Here’s what you need to know about visiting the Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory.

The Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory is located inside Miller State Park near the summit of Monadnock Mountain. Its purpose is to allow researchers and the public to study and enjoy the hawks of the region. Visitors can head up the mountain and spot hawks as they swoop through the air or simply enjoy the stellar views all around the observatory.

That's when peak hawk migration is underway and the observatory is staffed every day. The hawks can be seen most dependably on the several days following the arrival of a cold front. You can also visit anytime in the fall season for a chance to spot raptors, or head to the observatory simply for the amazing views of the surrounding mountainside.

You can expect to pay $4 per adult and $2 per child. New Hampshire residents over 65 and children under five are free. The closest parking lot is at the summit of Pack Monadnock, about 0.2 miles from the observatory. You can also park in the large lot at the bottom of the mountain and hike to the summit, which is only about a 1.3-mile trip one way on the Auto Road. If you want a slightly longer trek, opt for the Marion Davis Trail (1.4 miles) or the Wapack Trail (1.6 miles).
