Did you grow up in the 1970s? Even if you didn’t, this iconic decade is well known for political scandal, unique fashions, and civil unrest…. all things that happen now as well. But underneath all that, the 1970s was a decade filled with people just living their lives. 1. Posing for a photo in Crawford Notch. Are there still swans there today?
2. Some pastimes never change.
3. No high-tech climbing gear was needed to make it to the peaks of the Presidentials in 1976.
4. Lake Winnipesaukee was the same peaceful oasis in the 1970s that is was today... just with a lot less boat traffic.
5. But in the 1970s, the Androscoggin River and many of New Hampshire's other waterways were so polluted that signs warned against swimming.
6. The Environmental Protection Agency was just starting to control pollution from mills in the 1970s, setting in motion the move toward clear blue waters that New Hampshire residents enjoy today.
7. Still, some waters, like Lake Sunapee, were just as beautiful in the 1970s as they are now.

14. But even before the New Hampshire Motor Speedway opened, Granite State residents still loved to race fast at local tracks.
