Summer is the perfect time to plan a little escape from it all – with school out and work a little slower for many, it’s definitely a season that feels a little more laid back. Maybe it’s the heat, or the sunshine – whatever it is, it’d be a shame not to make the most of it. But sometimes, traveling far afield can just be too much hassle (and expense) to really make you feel relaxed. Fortunately, there’s no lack of fantastic vacation spots right here in New Hampshire, and there’s one spot in particular that’s perfect for a nostalgic, immersive New Hampshire summer experience.
Perched right on Squam Lake, Rockywold Deephaven Camps dates back to 1897, and over more than a century has built a reputation as the perfect getaway for families, couples, and groups of friends looking for a lakefront escape with plenty of options for adventure and relaxation.
There are 60 cottages and cabins to choose from, ranging from smaller cottages for 2 up to big ones for 14 people! Each has a private dock, a fireplace, and a screened in porch, so you'll be staying in style. If you don't want to commit to a week (required in the summer), you can also book nights in one of the camp's two lodges.
They really are ridiculously cozy – and we guarantee you'll start your day in a great mood when the first thing you see is Squam Lake. They're on the rustic side – no TVs, though the camp does have wifi – but that only adds to the relaxation factor.
Most of the time when you rent a cabin you're on your own for food. Not at Rockywold Deephaven! Here you'll eat three meals a day in the dining hall, and you're sure to adore every bite. Food is served buffet-style with plenty of options for all preferences, and delightful treats (Belgian waffles and homemade ice cream!) abound.
There's a great community spirit here – and with activities like square dances, 5ks, and softball games, there are plenty of opportunities to make friends.
If the hiking, swimming, yoga, square dancing, and more aren't enough for you, rent a boat! You can choose from canoes, kayaks, stand up paddleboards (SUP), Sunfish sailboats, hydro-bikes, rowboats, rowing canoes and 4 horsepower motors, either for daily or weekly rentals.
Bringing smaller members of your family? The Wee Campers program that runs each morning will ensure that your kids are just as happy as you are, and that you have the freedom to explore or relax as you please. You can also arrange additional childcare as needed.
