While being in New Hampshire offers the kind of peace and quiet you might not find in other places, there are some areas that offer a little something more. These are spots where the scenery is special and the ability to clear your head comes a bit faster. This monastery, hidden among the hills in southern New Hampshire, is one of those spots and it’s worth a visit if even just for an afternoon.
One of the most peaceful spots in New Hampshire can be found in Temple, part of the southern section of the state near the Massachusetts border.
Temple Forest Monastery started small in 2014. What began with just two monks has grown to a thriving community who come and stay anywhere from a short time to many years.
From the afternoon to evening monks spend their time in quiet contemplative thoughts. But visitors are encouraged to spend time here earlier in the day or for meditation at 5 a.m. and 7 p.m.
While there are events that take place here, most of the time it's nice just to wander around the grounds and take in the quiet beauty that surrounds you.
Day visits are lovely, but those looking to spend more time can opt for an overnight stay. The only rules for staying the night are following the eight precepts and leaving the phone and internet behind during your stay.
This daily ritual allows visitors to enjoy a meal with the monastery community. There's also a chance to contribute food for each meal. Just get in touch ahead of time to understand what you can bring.
This is a special and unique place to visit to clear your head. We especially love it in the late summer and autumn as the weather begins to change and fall foliage is at its best.
Temple Monastery is open to visitors daily. The recommend visits between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. or earlier. You can also join for meditation at 5 a.m. or 7 p.m. You can learn more about visiting and special events by checking out their website. You can reach them on 603-654-2292.
