Winter is all about having fun in the cold, and there’s no better place to do that than in New Hampshire. A unique event comes to the Granite State each year, and it’s a magical combination of ice and light that must be experienced in person.
The Ice Castles event comes to North Woodstock, New Hampshire every January. Depending on the weather, it remains open through late February or early March, as long as the ice holds out! On weekdays, the castles are only open in the evening, and on weekends and holidays, they are open in the afternoons and evenings.
Ice Castles are an award-winning attraction. The crystalline structures are hand-built by artisans and craftspeople to create a one-of-a-kind winter experience. Hundreds of thousands of icicles are lit by LED lights to create sculptures, tunnels, slides, and fountains.

The creator of the event, Brent Christensen, took inspiration from his children after moving from California to Utah. He built an ice cave in his front yard that was not only a hit with his own children, but with those all around the neighborhood and all across town.

Both adults and kids can zip along specially designed ice slides. Also explore ice caverns and squeeze through tunnels and passageways that are just large enough for an adult or child to fit through. Not for the claustrophobic!
Along with the castles themselves, other features of the experience include snow tubing and sleigh rides. A private arctic alcove is also available for those wedding proposals. The Mystic Forest Light Walk provides a leisurely stroll on a quarter-mile path illuminated by the glow of winter.
Although the event has grown significantly since its neighborhood beginnings, the original mission hasn't changed — to create happiness, laughter, and an unforgettable and unique winter experience. Its creators hope that the joy will live on long after the ice has melted.
