Hey! I'm a freelance writer and guidebook author. I've authored "New Hampshire's 52 With A View - A Hiker's Guide", serve as editor of Appalachian Mountain Club's "Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide", and and am co-editor of the "White Mountain Guide", also for AMC. I'm currently beginning work on the 6th Edition of AMC's Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide, which will be published in 2025. I live in southern New Hampshire and can usually be found wandering throughout the state's mountains and forests.
Living in southern New Hampshire, I’m surrounded by almost endless options to get outside and explore. Hundreds of miles of hiking trails and countless summits are located in this part of the state. One area in particular that I return to frequently is the Lakes Region, and one of my favorite places to get outside in this region is the Belknap Range just south of Lake Winnipesaukee. It’s an area of rugged beauty for experienced trampers but also serves as a wonderful introduction to hiking in New Hampshire if you are a beginner.
Recently, a group of friends and I got together to hike one of the most beautiful areas in the state, the Belknap Range in New Hampshire's Lakes Region.
This range of low but scenic peaks is a great training ground for those who are just getting into hiking or who are preparing for the higher elevations of the White Mountains.
While the mountains here sit well below the lauded 4,000-foot mark, don't underestimate them. There is some rugged and beautiful terrain tucked away in here.
On this particular day we hiked neighboring Whiteface Mountain and Piper Mountain. The south ledges on Piper, seen here, are one of my favorite spots in the range.
The Belknap Range is appropriate for beginner hikers due to the myriad trails for all abilities. Most of these routes are located on private land and hikers should respect this privilege.
If you've got some hiking experience under your belt but haven't yet ventured out in winter, the lower elevations of the Belknap Range is also an ideal environment to dial in your winter gear.
This is an area I hike frequently (just yesterday as of writing this, in fact!) as it's close to home and offers a variety of trips. It's truly a gem in southern New Hampshire!
If you want to test the waters of hiking in New Hampshire, the Belknap Range is a perfect area to try and catch the bug. For more information and to download a trail map, visit the Belknap Range Trails website and also consult the AMC Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide. If you’ve never hit the trail before, here are some tips to know to ensure a safe trip.
